1967-69 Cadillac Eldorado

The first 3 years of the "new" Eldorado are perhaps the most handsome Cadillacs ever built, and for this reason, today's Eldos dont look all that different (albeit much smaller).  Fine engineering, luxury, styling, and reliablitity all came together in this magnificent car.

This Cadillac was new in many respects.  For one, it was the first front-wheel drive automobile from the division.  It used a transmission that contained seperate torque converter and gearbox modules, which were connected by a light, unbreakable chain.  This enabled the mammoth the 429 V-8 to fit sideways with ease.  By '68, the Eldo had a 472, and in '70, it could be had with an unprecedented 500ci engine.  Ostensibly, a 221 inch long coupe deserved a large engine.  The car did not change much in three years, although GM opted for exposed headlamps in '69.

The front end of the '67s and '68s were not unlike the '65 Buick Riviera, which would eventually share the Eldo chassis.  But the Eldorado was definetly a distinctive car, with its strong creases and smooth curves.  And on the inside, it was completely Cadillac.  This is surely an example of what happens when the best automotive designers and engineers come together and build a people's car, rather than being worried about budgets and profits.
